Hi, Tony! Stories Podcast

The voting for the Webby Personal Voice Award ended April 30 and I thank all of you who went to the effort of registering with the Webby site to participate. I'm not sure if the purpose of the exercise was to show how many friends you had or to shamelessly promote your website, but I appreciate your support.

The number of people voting for the People's Voice Webby in all categories is huge, somewhere around 500,000 I'm told, but around here it's the wonderful, quirky, genuine individual voice that matters and every time I hear from you in whatever fashion it's a gift.

I also thank all of you who have been sending emails since Hi, Tony! started and good wishes since I've been in Chemo. I hope you won't mind if I share a few of the things you've written that have picked up my spirits, kept me company, and given me a good laugh.

Tony

Dear Tony,

It feels I know you well, even though I only had the pleasure of being your guest on your journey into the everyday lives of others. A good friend of mine and my sister went through chemotherapy—with success! Both have been diagnosed as fully cured.

I wish I could give back just a little bit of the joy you've brought to so many listeners to help you, your family and friends through this difficult time.

Please get better soon!

My youngest daughter went through chemo and radiation when she had Hodgkins' Lymphoma. I will show you a picture of her bald. You will forgive me I hope for assuming that she looked cuter than you do.

(She came through well, knock wood, and is now a resident at Mass General Hospital.)

Yrs,

Robert

Last night I received two distressing messages from loved ones, both cancer-related, one from my uncle, the second from a dear friend. Tonio, I know it isn't an easy project for you to be working on, but this Chronicle is important stuff. Courage and humanity and grace and reflection, and above all, truth, need to be shared. I'm so glad you're putting it out there.

Sorry you're having such a hard time partner. A lot of how well you do has to do with how you deal with all this. For the first time in my life I was forced to trust people. Everyone from the doctor, to the nurse to the guy that swept the floor held my life in their hands. Everything that happens every day and every minute of the day and night are important things. They all matter.

My best advice is don't try to keep a schedule. Just "be." If you are asleep and it is noon, then you are asleep and it is noon. If you are awake and it is three a.m., then you are awake and it is three a.m. Just think of all this as having an unwelcome guest in your house, and you're having to tear the back of the house off to get rid of the bastard because that's where he lives. And remember, I think you are going to make it. That’s all for now. Any time day or night buddy. Any time.

Your pal. Randy

Hi Tony! I am a college student from China.  Your stories have been with me since my first day in college, and now I am a senior, how time flies. You were with me when I felt down, when I felt lonely, and your stories became my English textbook thanks to the transcripts available. I just want to thank you Tony, for letting me know that I am not alone, I just didn't get the chance to listen to other people's stories.

I hope you will be back soon no matter what difficulties lies ahead.

Best wishes,

Yale Guan

Don't sweat the bald head. I've had one for years. But stay out of bowling alleys unless you want some guy's fingers in your eyes and mouth.
